Artist Biography

Johannes Hänsch (1875-1945) was a German landscape painter and sculptor. He received his initial artistic training from his father – who was also a sculptor – before studying at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin. As a freelance landscape painter, he was a member of the Association of Berlin Artists. He participated annually in the Great Berlin Art Exhibition, as well as in the exhibitions of the Association of Berlin Artists and at the Munich Glass Palace. He was exempted from military service in the First World War due to having survived tuberculosis. Even after the “degenerate art” campaign in 1937, he remained true to landscape painting and did not create any paintings on political commission. Hänsch was unmarried and had no children. He bequeathed his entire estate, including his house, studio, and all his works, to his housekeeper Marie Walter.
