Attributed to Johann J. Friedrich Walthard (1818-1870), this thought-provoking genre scene depicts a bride preparing for her wedding day. Historically, the 'toilet of the bride' referred to the ritual process of bathing, dressing, styling hair, and adorning oneself with jewellery before the ceremony. This was often a social event attended by close female friends and family, as depicted here. The scene is rendered in exquisite detail, with light flooding through a side window, illuminating the room's décor and the artist's mastery of perspective. The groom can be glimpsed at the far door, hoping to catch sight of his bride. The painting is well presented in a gilt-effect frame with a delicate running pattern to the inner window. Though unsigned, the painting bears a gallery label on the verso by Dr. Th. Engelmann of Basel, inscribed in French with the title and attribution. On canvas laid to board.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age. The canvas has been previously laid to a supporting board. Inspection under UV light reveals minor restoration and overpainting. Craquelure has been previously consolidated. Light marks/soiling to the surface of the painting. Light wear noted to the gilt effect frame.
