Attrib. James Dring (1905-1985) - Mid 20th Century Oil The Flower Seller

Description

This delightful oil study depicts a flower feller clutching a bouquet in the crook of one arm. Her hat is adorned in yellow carnations and she wears a long purple coat. The artist captures the women in an impressionist style, using gestural brushstrokes to create movement within the composition. Unsigned. Artist name inscribed to gallery label on the reverse. Presented in a distressed wooden frame. On board.

Artist Biography

James Dring was a painter and was the younger brother of artist William Dring. Born in Wandsworth, London, he studied at Clapham School of Art, 1920-27 then at the RCA and he also attended pottery classes with Staite Murray. Soon after he opened a pottery workshop decorating tiles, plates and dishes which he ran from 1932 until he allegedly ceased ceramic making in 1947. Photographs of seven dishes, decorated with sea creatures, designed and made by James Dring are illustrated in ‘Decorative Art’ 1950-51, which suggests that he was producing ceramics into the 1950's.

Dring later taught at St. Martin's School of Art, 1943-72. He showed at the RA, RBA, ROI, and at the Wertheim Gallery. Examples of his work are in the collections of the Contemporary Art Society, the Medici Society, Victoria and Albert Museum, Southampton Art Gallery, the River & Rowing Museum and in Brussels, Belgium at the Mons Gallery.
