Artist Biography
Herbert Hampton was a sculptor and stone carver born in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire the son of a local builder. He studied at Cardiff School of Art & Design, Lambeth School of Art, Westminster School of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art and at the Académie Julian and Académie Colarossi in Paris. He was elected a Member of the Royal Society of British Sculptors and is known largely for his public memorials. These include the Queen Victoria Monument in Dalton Square, Lancaster, a statue of the Duke of Devonshire in Whitehall and Henry Austin, Lord Aberdare, located at New Promenade, Aberystwyth, Wales. Hampton exhibited at the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, International Society of Sculptors, Painters & Gravers, London Salon, Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, New Gallery, Royal Academy of Arts, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Society of Miniature Painters, Sculptors and Gravers, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Scottish Academy and Walker Art Gallery. He died at Great Bardfield, Essex. It is possible that he was the father of an artist known as William Herbert D. Hampton, (1898-1969).
