Painter and father of the Bedfordshire based artistic family. His father John W Stannard, (b. 1824) is recorded in the 1851 census as a painter and glazer born in Marylebone. It is likely that he taught his son to paint and he is thought to have studied at the South Kensington Schools. His illustrations appeared in wildlife and sporting journals and in the Illustrated London News. Henry John's children included Henry John Sylvester Stannard, Alexander Molyneux Stannard, Ivy, Emily and Lilian Stannard. He was elected a Member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1894 and also showed at the Royal Academy, Dudley Gallery, Walker Art Gallery, Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and the Royal Cambrian Academy.
