Description

A very fine and delicate graphite drawing of a young figure, possibly a cherub, attributed to the 18th Century painter and engraver Giovanni Battista Cipriani RA (1727-1785). There is also another graphite drawing by the artist on the reverse of the laid paper, depicting three classical male heads with highly detailed facial features. Well-presented in a blue washline mount with gilt detail, as shown. Unsigned. On laid.

Condition

In fine condition overall. Some mount burn to the edges of the laid, and surface dirt commensurate with its age. There is also a small stain to the lower left quadrant of the drawing, as shown. Mount burn also visible on mount, with some surface indentations.

Artist Biography

Giovanni Battista Cipriani RA (1727-1785) was an Italian painter and engraver who resided in England from 1755 onwards. Many of his own designs were reproduced for prints, and he worked closely with his friend and fellow engraver Francesco Bartolozzi (1727-1815). Born in Florence, he became acquainted with Sir William Chambers in Rome, and was patronised by the Duke of Richmond on arrival in London.

His connections led to his work on Buckingham House (now Buckingham Palace) and Somerset House, where he produced a painted ceiling alongside Sir Joshua Reynolds in the Royal Academy's ante-room. As a founding member of the Royal Academy in 1768, he also produced the academy's first diploma.
