A vibrant gouache depicting the Crypta Neapolitana, an ancient Roman tunnel carved through the Posillipo hill in Naples. Well presented in a vintage gilt frame. Unsigned. On paper.

Condition

Overall the condition is good for a picture of this age, with good retention of colour. Light foxing to the paper. Marks and scuffs to the frame leave it with a vintage, distressed finish.

Artist Biography

Gioacchino La Pira was a nineteenth-century Italian painter who specialised in Romantic gouache landscapes for travellers and tourists, especially wealthy aristocrats undertaking The Grand Tour.
