This fine work in oil depicts a gated stone archway in a garden, appearing to lead into a small tunnel. The artist has carefully instilled a sense of momentary light in the composition. Attributed to Eduardo Matania (1847-1929), this work is faintly inscribed to the lower left 'E. Matania'. Provenance: Franco Matania (1922-2016); thence by descent to Luis Matania; acquired from studio sale 2020.
Finely presented in a gilt wood frame and linen slip, as shown.
On On canvas laid to board.In very good condition for a picture of this age. Some light surface dirt and some very tiny holes to the canvas near the lower half. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration. The frame is in fine condition.

Eduardo Matania (1847-1929) was an Italian painter and illustrator, depicting detailed pencil portraits, genre, patriotic and historic scenes. He was born in Naples, and trained starting in 1862 at the Istituto di belle arti of Naples.
He made a living mostly as an illustrator for the Bideri publishing house, and also worked with the editor Emilio Treves. He was attached to the School of Resina. For example, he illustrated a Storia del Risorgimento Italiano (1889) by Francesco Bertolini. Matania also illustrated an edition of Ariosto's La Gerusalemme liberata. He was one of the painters to decorate the ceilings of the Caffè Gambrinus of Naples.
Others in his immediate family also became well known illustrators. His son, Fortunino Matania, also became a well-known painter and illustrator. Edoardo's nephew, Ugo Matania was a well-known illustrator during World War I, and his great nephew Franco Matania was a prolific artist.
