Description

A 19th century landscape depicting Lausanne, Switzerland. Attributed to David Cox Jnr (1809-1885), who was an English painter in watercolour, mostly of landscapes. Although well known, Cox is surpassed by his better known father David Cox Snr. who is considered one of the greatest English landscape painters, and a major figure of the Golden age of English watercolour.

The Lausanne Cathedral is depicted in the centre of the composition, with Lake Geneva and the Swiss Alps visible in the background. Cox exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1827, at the New Society of Painters in Water Colours from 1841 and the Society of Painters in Water Colours from 1848, where over the course of his career he exhibited over 580 works.

We have attributed the watercolour to Cox due to the similarities in the handling of the paint and its composition. Cox is also known to have travelled to Switzerland during the mid part of the 19th century where he painted and sketched extensively. An inscription on the reverse reads 'Inscribed and signed on the original mount'. The watercolour is well presented in a washline mount with a gilt reeded frame.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration in areas, especially to the sky. The top left corner has seemingly undergone some restoration, with a deep crease or tear having been repaired. Shows some minor foxing. The frame and mount are in excellent condition.
