Description

A beautiful 20th-century Scherenschnitt, a traditional folk art paper cut silhouette from the Swiss region of Gstaad, detailing a symmetrical pastoral scene. All the classic elements are displayed within the composition: two large trees of life, a central heart filled with intricate foliage, a flowering vine border arching over the top, and a ground-level frieze of country figures. There are people gardening and harvesting, a woman with a basket, children, dogs, and birds in the smaller tree. The bottom decorative band with its diamond pattern and the scalloped edge are typical framing devices in this tradition. The style comes from the Pays-d'Enhaut region of the Bernese Oberland and Vaud Alps in Switzerland, the area around Château-d'Œx and Gstaad. This example has been presented behind glass in a black wooden frame. Unsigned. Inscribed verso 'Chr. Schwizgebel from Gstaad'. On paper.

Condition

Even discolouration and some water damage to the edges of the backing paper. Minor surface wear and scuffs to the frame. Overall, the artwork is in good condition for its age.
