Attrib. Charles Vickers (1821-1895) - 19th Century Oil Children in a Farmyard

Description

A wonderful idyllic rural scene depicting two young children and their mother (or older sibling). They appear to be picking berries from a large tree, the older figure holds her apron so as not to spill the crop of fruit she's picked, while her two smaller helpers watch on. We have attributed the painting to Charles Vickers due to the similarities in the handling of the paint and colour pallet. Painted on canvas laid to thick card. Unsigned.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration with areas of craquelure.

Artist Biography

Charles Vickers was born in Worthing in 1821 and is a well regarded painter of animal and genre-scenes. Vickers studied at South Kensington School of Arts but lived in Europe between 1845-1855 where he won the silver medal at Ecole de Beaux Arts.
