Description

A very fine mid 19th century watercolour attributed to the English artist and politician Charles Stewart Hardinge. Here the artist has captured military manoeuvres in Windsor Great Park during the mid to late 19th century. The redcoats of the British army can be seen walking through the large parkland, with figures on horseback and others resting on the grass. With touches of body colour and graphite. Attributed to Charles Stewart Hardinge due to the similarities in the handling of the paint and subject matter to other known works by Hardinge. Well presented in a washline mount and wooden frame. Inscribed on the reverse. Unsigned. On wove.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. Overall the condition is very good. Minor marks to the frame.

Artist Biography

Charles Stewart Hardinge, 2nd Viscount Hardinge (1822-1894) was a British Conservative politician. Hardinge was the son of Field Marshal Henry Hardinge, 1st Viscount Hardinge, and Lady Emily Jane. He was educated at Eton and destined for the army, but while a boy met with a severe accident which compelled him to use an artificial leg for the rest of his life. In 1840 he matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford, and graduated B.A. in 1844. Within a month after taking his degree he accompanied his father to India as private secretary, and was with him during all the period of his governor-generalship. Hardinge was elected Member of Parliament for Downpatrick in 1851, a seat he held until 1856, when he succeeded his father in the viscountcy and entered the House of Lords. In 1868 he was appointed a trustee of the National Portrait Gallery, and in 1876 chairman of the trustees, an office which he actively filled till his death. He was brought up among artistic associations, and was considered a proficient artist in watercolours.
