Attrib. Charles J. Watson (1846-1927) - Early 20th Century Watercolour Windmill

Description

Bearing his distinctive impressionistic style, this fine early 20th Century watercolour with gouache detail has been attributed to the well-established artist Charles John Watson RE (1846-1927). Depicting a windmill with children and figures at the side of a river, the compositional elements are heavily suggestive of a work by Watson. Fine brushwork and a naturalistic palette complete this charming work. There is the remains of a label to the reverse, reading 'by Charles J. Wat***, purchased from Minna B***'. We have another pictured with the same intact label, reading 'purchased from his Widow Minna Bolingbroke Nov 29th 1924'. Well-presented in a double washline mount and thin wooden frame with gilt beading, as shown. Inscribed on the reverse.On wove.

Condition

In good condition overall, for a picture of this age. There is some slight surface discolouration to the paper. Only very minor marks to the frame.

Artist Biography

Printmaker and painter born in Norwich. Watson was amongst the earliest Fellows of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, joining after the ‘Allcomers’ exhibition in Spring 1881. After the founding of the RE in 1880 by Seymour Haden, the Council, which included Alphonse Legros, issued an open invitation to all etchers to participate in an exhibition which was eventually to become the Society’s annual shows. The response was enormous and nearly 500 etchings were exhibited and membership leapt proportionately. Watson was one of fifty-five artists to be elected RE in 1881. He had taken up etching in 1872 while based in Norwich before moving to London about 1888. A prolific exhibitor he showed at the FAS, GI, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, MAFA, RA, RBA, RHA, RI, ROI, Agnew's, Dudley Gallery, and Dowdeswells. He was married to the artist Minna Bolingbroke and his work is in the collection of Perth Art Gallery, Australia. He died at Hammersmith.
