Charles Ansell (b.1752) was a British painter, engraver, and draughtsman who was active at the end of the 18th century. He primarily depicted genre scenes and animals. Ansell's name appears in Royal Academy exhibition catalogues in 1781 and 1782. There is an entry in the register of pupils at the Academie Royale in Paris dated 30 March 1778 which alludes to a 'Charles Anselt', noted as having been born in London in 1752 and having been a pupil of Vincent and a protege of Lepicie. Ansell/Anselt was held in high esteem for his painting of horses, and his 'Death of a Racehorse', a series of six plates published in 1784, is highly sought after.
