Description

A charmingly sized and exquisitely painted oil landscape on wood panel, showing a group of cattle drinking from the shallows of a mountain lake. The foreground and cattle are cast into cool shadows which contrast with the golden warmth of the sunlit hills in the distance. Monogrammed to the lower left with his monogram 'GE' for 'Goldie'. The painting has been presented in a handsome, early 20th Century gilt frame. On wood panel.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including minor discolouration. Some of the wood panel striations are vaguely visible through the paint.The frame has tarnishing and scuffing typical for a frame of this age.

Artist Biography

Charles Alphonse Goldie was a British 19th Century painter of historic and genre scenes as well as figures and landscapes. Goldie exhibited his work at the Royal Academy in London from 1858 to 1879. His other known works include 'David Before Goliath' and 'True to Death'.
