A fine study of a family scene at a table in pen and ink, attributed to the well-known artist Henry Singleton RA (1766-1839). The expressive lines and quick movement in the work portray a lively scene, and the artist has carefully depicted facial features and dress typical of the early 19th Century. In very good condition. There are some marks and slight foxing to the surface, commensurate with its age. Clean mount, as shown.

Artist Biography

Henry Singleton was born in London in 1766, as part of an artistic family. He was raised by his uncle, a pupil of Ozias Humphrey, and he was working as a professional artist by the age of 16. He entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1783 and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1784 until his death. Singleton gained fame as a history painter. He never fulfilled his potential in this area but remained popular throughout his life, particularly as a portrait artist. He lived in London most of his life and died at the house of a friend in 1839.
