Description

An atmospheric scene depicting a storm brewing over a secluded lake. Heather, wildflowers, and rocks populate the foreground as clouds begin to obscure the peaks of mountains in the distance. Presented glazed in a cream, brown, and white triple mount and a distressed silver gilt-effect wooden frame. Signed to the lower-right edge. There is a label to the verso with an extensive biography of the artist. On watercolour paper.

Artist Biography

Ashton Cannell RSMA (1927-1994) was a painter and illustrator, born Edward Ashton Cannell, who studied at Isle of Man School of Art 1945-49 and at Liverpool School of Art 1949-51. He taught at the Isle of Man Art School and at various London schools and showed at the Archer Gallery, Royal Academy, RI, RBA and RSMA, of which he was a member. Ashton Cannell, as he preferred to be known, was a gold medal winner at the Paris Salon and also a member of the Wapping Group, the London Sketch Club and the UA. Examples of his work are in the GAC and the DOE.
