Artist Biography

Arthur Tucker was born in 1864, in Bristol and died in 1929. Tucker was the son of the artist Edward Tucker, who taught him to paint, and brother of Hubert Coutts Tucker (known professionally as Hubert Coutts). Arthur then went on to move with his family to Langdale, near Ambleside, the Lake District and became an RBA in 1895 and was also a founder member of the Lake Artists Society in 1904. Tucker spent most of his working life in the Lake District. He was an accomplished artist who specialised in landscapes, mainly of the Lake District, although he also painted Welsh and Yorkshire views. Arthur Tucker exhibited at the leading London galleries from 1883. He exhibited intermittently at the Royal Academy between 1887 and 1902 and annually from 1904 to 1919. Also The Royal Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street Gallery, RA, RBA, RHA, RI, RSA, Manchester City AG, Liverpool. The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, The Walker Gallery, the New Watercolour Society and in Carlisle. He was elected a member of The Royal Society of British Artists in 1898, and later Vice President. He lived in Windermere and he painted widely throughout the north of England and illustrated the book called 'Wordsworthshire' with nearly fifty drawings.
