Artist Biography
Arthur Rigden Read (1879-1955) was a well-regarded woodcut artist born and christened Arthur Robert Read in Southwark, and later adopted the name 'Rigden' in favour of Robert. During his younger years, he travelled extensively around Japan and as a result, several of his images are distinctly Oriental in their design and appearance. Rigden Read showed his work at the Colour Woodcut Society, Beaux Arts Gallery, RGI, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, RA, Redfern Gallery and RWS. His work is in the collections of the BM, Hastings Museum and Art Gallery and the V&A.
