Artist Biography
Arthur Neal is a painter and printmaker born in Kent. He studied at Camberwell School of Arts & Crafts from 1969-73. Neal has led a varied life, working as a shepherd and farmworker for five years until 1978. In 1985 he won second prize at the John Player Portrait Exhibition held at the National Portrait Gallery. From 1980-83 he taught at the Metropole Arts Centre, in Folkestone, followed by three years teaching at Maidstone College of Art. Fascinated by the oeuvre of the poet Edward Thomas, Neal published Eight Poems illustrated with a suite of etchings, in 1978 working on a limited-edition centenary volume, again illustrated with etchings.
