Painter, born in Sheffield, Yorkshire. He was employed in a steelworks as a clerk at age of sixteen and began painting two years later spending about a year at Sheffield College of Art but was otherwise self-taught. He was offered a place at the Royal College of Art but was unable to accept due to lack of funding. He spent the next twenty years painting and working in any available job to fund his work as an artist. This ended in 1950 when he went to work for Essex County Council making 'artist's impressions' and arranging exhibitions concerned with the development of new satellite towns.
By 1961 he had returned to his native Yorkshire and became the first curator of the Manor House Museum and Art Gallery, Ilkley. Bradford Art Gallery gave him a retrospective exhibition in 1977 and a decade later, an exhibition 'North and South' was held at Leeds City Art Gallery. Dean Clough staged a posthumous retrospective in 1990.
