Arthur James Turrell (1871-1940) - Early 20th Century Etching Siena Cathedral

Description

A very fine and detailed etching by the English artist Arthur James Turrell (1871-1940), entitled 'Siena Cathedral' and depicting a vaulted arcade to the side of the nave and altar, with figures in prayer to the lower right corner. The artist has portrayed the fine details and form of the duomo, retaining the impressive features of the piers and coffered vaults. The figures add both balance and perspective in this handsome work. Blind stamp marked 'EX' to the lower left corner. Signed and inscribed. On wove.

Condition

In very good condition overall. There is some surface dirt around the borders, and very light scuffing. There is a small 1cm tear to the upper edge in the border.

Artist Biography

Arthur James Turrell (1871-1940) was a painter and etcher born in St. John's Wood, London, the son of Arthur Turrell (1847-1898) a Loddon, Norfolk born etcher. Turrell junior studied in London and Paris and exhibited views of Italy and Spain. The venues included the RA, GI, Walker Art Gallery and the RE who elected him and Associate in 1916. He died in Willesden Green, London.
