Description

A beautifully coloured mezzotint after the original painting by Gabriël Metsu (1629–1667). The scene shows a Jacobean woman reading a letter with her maid present. Hogg has signed in graphite to the lower right and the publisher's details are inscribed in plate at the top. On wove.

Condition

In fine condition. There is a framer's inscription along the lower edge in graphite.

Artist Biography

Arthur Hogg (1872-1949) was a painter of portraits, etcher, and mezzotint engraver who specialised in colour mezzotints after old master paintings, published by The Museum Galleries and others. He was born in London and studied at the RCA and in Paris. Hogg showed at the Chenil Gallery, Royal Academy, and at the London Salon. A portrait of William Ellery Channing (1780-1843) by Hogg is in the collection of Harris Manchester College, University of Oxford.
