Arthur Foord Hughes (1856-1934) - Watercolour Luck's Mill, Angmering

Description

A finely painted watercolour of the derelict Luck's Mill at Winchelsea, Sussex. Painted pre-1939 by a local artist, Arthur Foord Hughes. There is an interesting handwritten label affixed to the reverse which details the provenance of this painting. The painting has been signed to the lower right corner and is presented in a dark grey double card mount. Signed. On watercolour paper.

Condition

Painting is in fine condition. Some surface marks to lower section of mount and minor age toning to the outermost edges of mount.

Artist Biography

Arthur Foord Hughes was born in Pimlico, London and was the eldest child of Pre-Raphaelite artist Arthur Hughes. After early drawing lessons from his father, he studied art at Heatherley's, at the Slade and at the Royal Academy Schools. At 21 years of age he began to show at the RA and about this time he also showed at the Society of British Artists, Grosvenor Gallery, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, New Gallery, RBA, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, Ipswich Art Club and ROI. Examples of his work are in the collections of Haworth Art Gallery, Hove Museum & Art Gallery and Maidstone Art Gallery. His death was recorded in July 1934 at a nursing home in Hastings, Sussex. He added the additional name of Foord to differentiate him from his father. He was married to Elizabeth Jones, also an artist.
