A wonderful 19th century landscape depicting an expansive forest with figures. The artist has perfectly captured the light and movement of the natural landscape, the romantic elements and characteristics of this piece draw inspiration from the great landscape painters of the 18th century, as the strong composition and muted colour palette creates an atmospheric setting in this late summer scene. The fine touches of bright colour and areas of impasto bring the composition to life, the artist has created a sense of depth and perspective with the layers and textures . We have attributed the work to the English landscape artist Robert Ladbrook due to a small sticker on the reverse which reads 'R. Ladbroke'. The style and subject matter is similar to that of Ladbrook, and it's possible a signature or inscription was lost when the canvas was relined. Ladbrook along with John Crome, was a founder of the Norwich School of painters, Ladbrooke painted chiefly of views of Norfolk scenery; but his reputation has never been more than local to this part of England. Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and craquelure. At some point the canvas has been relined, the restoration has been completed to a high standard. There has been some overpainting to the lower edge where the canvas has been cut and pasted onto the new stretchers.
