Armand Coussens was born in Saint-Ambroix (Gard), France. He studied at the École supérieure des beaux-arts de Nîmes. He began making prints in 1912 and found success in selling them in 1914 to master print maker Vernant. In 1919 the Musée du Luxembourg bought eight of his etchings and some of his paintings. he was notoriously enthusiastic about coloured etchings, although they were still seen as inferior to black and white at the time.
