Artist Biography

Annie Soudain was born in Kent (near Dover), spent her early years in Cornwall (Truro), and studied art in Canterbury and Brighton. A retired art teacher (both school and adult), she now lives in Hastings in East Sussex, concentrating on her own work. Annie uses a variety of media, but her main focus currently is on linoprinting.

Much of her recent work with lino employs the reduction method, which involves progressively cutting, inking up, and printing from the same block. Hence the small editions (25 usually), since the method is relatively labour-intensive. As she says in the annual South East Open Studios catalogue, 'I use images in my head or in my immediate surroundings as inspiration for paintings, linoprints, and collages'. Vigorous composition is very much a feature of her pictures, as can be seen on her website.

In addition to belonging to the SBA (she was awarded their 'GreatArt' prize at the 2013 show), Annie Soudain is a member of the Sussex Guild and the Rye Society of Artists, with both of which she exhibits regularly.
