Sisters Anna and Doris Zinkeisen are highly collectable Scottish born modern artists. Anna Zinkeisen was born in Kilcreggan, Scotland. She decided to become an artist at the age of eleven and entered a technical school to study drawing and anatomy. In 1916 she won a scholarship to the RA Schools where she studied for five years. Whilst there she worked in the sculpture school at the suggestion of Sir William Orpen and received her first commission from Messrs Wedgwood for decorative plaques which were sent to the Exposition des Art Decoratifs in Paris. For these she was awarded a Silver Medal. She also designed posters for London Transport as did her sister. Anna also designed 18 panel posters plus a poster designed in anticipation of the end of World War II which included a quote from Churchill. The day will come when the joybells will ring again throughout Europe, and when victorious nations, masters not only of their foes but of themselves, will plan and build in justice, in tradition, and in freedom a house of many mansions where there will be room for all.'
Anna Zinkeisen gave up sculpture for painting, specialising in portraits and mural decoration. Her commissions included work with her sister Doris Zinkeisen on the Queen Mary and the Queen Elizabeth ocean liners. During World War II she worked as a medical artist at St. Mary's Hospital, Paddington, also made drawings of war injuries for the Royal College of Surgeons and made RDI in 1940. She was elected vice-president of the ROI and she also designed posters for the LNER and SR. Examples of her work are in the collections of the Beecroft Art Gallery, Bradford Museums and Galleries, Brighton & Hove Art Gallery, IWM, NPG, National Trust, Nottingham Castle Museum, Maidstone Art Gallery, Mercer Art Gallery, NRM, RAF Museum, Hendon, Royal Shakespeare Company, Southampton Art Gallery and the Usher Gallery. Her daughter is the painter Julia Heseltine.
