Andre Nevil was a French artist and illustrator working around 1900. He produced illustrations of French life for modern advertisement posters and for magazines such as ‘La Vie Parisienne’. Typifying his work, the weekly magazine ‘La Vie Parisienne’, first published during late Victorian times, became increasingly popular during WWI and subsequently during the roaring twenties. It was directed at French high society and accented towards the arts and male readers. The publication spanned both the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods and its content was often mildly risqué but nevertheless tastefully drawn, reflecting the Golden Age of French Art – La Belle Epoch.

Our collection of pen and ink portrait sketches by Nevil includes studies of French personalities, figures of the stage in theatrical poses and fine costumes, and nude female beauties. Many sketches have coloured pastel highlights, and nearly all are laid down on backing paper.
