Artist Biography
Painter, sculptor, printermaker, born in Southend-on-Sea, Essex of French and Anglo-Irish parentage. During the 1930’s he worked as a theatre designer, sign-writer and scene painter. His varied career included much theatre work in the 1930's before war service, including Mercury Theatre productions from 1932; designing the setting for the New York production of Murder in the Cathedral, by T S Eliot, 1938; and designing for Windsor Repertory Theatre, 1939. He held his first solo exhibition in 1949 at Leicester Galleries, London, and continued to exhibit regularly there until 1970. Between 1966-74 he was a tutor in printmaking at the Royal College of Art tutor, 1966–74 and in 1966 he held a retrospective exhibition at Reading Art Gallery. He showed at the Royal Academy, Arts Council of Great Britain, British Council, Redfern Gallery, Wildenstein, Leger Galleries and the O’Hana Gallery and with Sally Hunter & Patrick Seale Fine Art. Bicat was awarded an OBE for his services to the Intelligence Unit during World War II. Examples of his work are in the collections of British Museum, National Museum of Wales, Dallas Museum of Fine Art and the Cleveland Museum, Ohio. In 2002, Christie’s, South Kensington, offered works from Bicat’s studio.
