Anders Leonard Zorn (1860–1920) was one of Sweden's most celebrated artists, achieving international renown as a painter, sculptor, and printmaker. His mastery of portraiture brought him into the company of royalty and heads of state—his subjects included King Oscar II of Sweden and three American presidents: Grover Cleveland, William H. Taft, and Theodore Roosevelt. Born on his grandparents' farm in Yvraden, a small hamlet near Mora in the province of Dalarna, Zorn showed exceptional promise from an early age. After completing his schooling in Mora Strand and later Enköping, he entered the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts in Stockholm in 1875, where his talent quickly distinguished him among both faculty and the city's artistic circles. In 1881, Zorn met Emma Lamm, a cultured woman from a prominent Jewish merchant family, whose world was far removed from his rural upbringing. After a long engagement, they married in a civil ceremony in October 1885. An inveterate traveller, Zorn moved fluidly between London, Paris, Spain, Italy, the Balkans, and the United States, absorbing influences while building a reputation that transcended borders. It was above all his portraiture that secured his legacy: celebrated for its psychological acuity and his uncanny ability to capture the inner life of a subject.
