Description

A striking mid 19th century portrait depicting Perses Elizabeth Cooper, wife of Joel Henry Cooper, an American physician, pharmacist and abolitionist from Wisconsin. Cooper is captured with flushed cheeks that are complemented by a modest olive dress with long sleeves and a high collar. The ensemble is softened by a delicate white lace neckpiece and a pink silk bow fastened with a small brooch. Her hair is neatly looped under her ears, in keeping with the style of the time. The artist captures the subject with delicate precision and nuanced sensitivity. Unsigned. Beautifully presented in a substantial gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.
