Description

A very fine watercolour en grisaille depicting a woman resting her hand on a plinth displaying a classical sculpture, likely painted during the American Civil War (1861-1865). She wears a fairly straight-cut version of the Zouave jacket with pagoda sleeves which was particularly popular in this period. A cut-away jacket with elaborate embroidery, it was inspired by the uniform worn by volunteer troops on both sides of the conflict, mimicking the dress of the elite French Zouaves. Presented glazed in a fine gilt frame with leaf and berry moulding to the inner edge and ornate pierced foliate moulding to the outer edge. The pair to this portrait, likely depicting the husband of the subject, is also available at Sulis Fine Art. On wove.

Condition

There are some areas of restoration to the frame. Overall well-presented and in excellent condition.
