An atmospheric oil painting by the artist Alfred Vavasour Hammond FRSA. The scene depicts a coastal view with sailing boats and figures. Signed to the lower right-hand corner. The artist's name and possible location ('The Haven + Cley') are inscribed on the reverse. Presented in a light grey wooden slip and in a wooden frame with an inner canvas detail, as shown. On board.

Condition

In good condition overall, with minor surface marks. Inspection under UV light shows minor areas of inpainting. Extensive scuffing, small losses and marks to the frame.

Artist Biography

A self-taught artist who studied the work of Dutch marine artists, as his great-grandfather was a ships architect to the Dutch Royal Navy. In 1955, Hammond was elected to the Wapping Group of Artists and in 1962 elected a member of the RGI. His pictures have been bought for reproduction by Winsor & Newton and Royle and were reproduced as greetings cards. Hammond's painting 'The Pool with London Bridge and Saint Pauls' was bought by the Port of London Authority in 1962 and was exhibited in the Festival of the City of London Exhibition in 1963.
In 1970, when he moved his studio from London to Devon, he was elected a member of the St. Ives Society of Artists and Torbay Guild of Artists. His work is represented in the collection of Watford Museum, and he has exhibited in group shows at venues that include the Paris Salon, Royal Society of Marine Artists, RGI, Wapping Group of Artists, Chelsea Art Society, RI, NS, Medici Gallery, London, City Art Gallery, London and the Tunbridge Wells Gallery, Kent.
