Alfred Powell (fl.1870-1901) - 1894 Watercolour Snowdonia

Description

A picturesque watercolour depicting a landscape in the Snowdonia National Park. A later label on the verso describes the view as looking towards Mount Snowdon and Aberglaslyn Pass from the marshes where the lake Glaslyn becomes tidal. It is plausible that this painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1894, where the catalogue shows Powell to have shown a painting titled 'Snowdon'. Presented glazed in a pale-pink mount and distressed gilt frame. Signed to the lower-right edge. On watercolour paper.

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some foxing and discolouration. Overall in good condition.

Artist Biography

Alfred Powell (fl.1870-1901) was a landscape painter from London. He exhibited seventeen times at the Royal Academy, including 'A Cattle Path on the Greta, Yorks' (1870), 'A Summer Morning, Ullswater' (1872), and 'St Michael's Mount' (1901). He also exhibited fifty-two times at the Society of British artists, twenty times at the Royal Institute (previously the New Watercolour Society), and twenty-six times at various other exhibitions. One of his watercolours is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum.
