Alfred William Parsons RA (1847-1920) was a painter and garden designer, born at Beckington, Somerset, the son of a surgeon. He worked as a clerk in the Savings Bank Department of the Post Office from 1865 to 1867, before studying at the Royal College of Art to become a full-time painter. During the period 1886-94 he exhibited at the New English Art Club and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, but he was more loyal to the Royal Academy to which he was elected a full member in 1911. Parsons also held a solo show at the Fine Art Society in 1893. He was elected President of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1913, a position he held until his death seven years later.
