Description

An exquisite watercolour landscape by the well listed artist Alfred Heaton Cooper (1863-1929). Here the artist has captured a small farm in the shadow of a dominating rocky mountain. Sheep graze in the foreground and a puff of smoke is visible from the small stone farmhouse. This idyllic scene is typical for Heaton Cooper, whose well-regarded landscapes often feature a dramatic vista. The study is well presented in a simple wood frame with gilt detail and a charcoal mount. Printed biography fixed to the reverse from The Heaton Cooper Studio Ltd. Signed to the lower right. On watercolour paper.

Condition

Overall the condition is good. There is some very minor signs of discolouration and specs of trapped dirt beneath the glazing. Very minor marks to the frame.

Artist Biography

Alfred Heaton Cooperwas a painter and illustrator, born at Swinton in Lancashire. He was raised in Bolton until he was 21 where he worked as an accountant in Bolton Town Hall, but in 1884 he gained a scholarship to Westminster School of Art. He studied under George Clausen and Frederick Walker. Following his London training, he spent some time working in Morocco and southern Spain. Cooper also travelled to Norway 1891-92, where he met his future wife and built a studio beside the fjord at Balestrand, which stands today and is known as Cooperhus. After living in Bolton for three years they settled at Ambleside in the Lake District, where he found much inspiration for his watercolours and where he showed with the Lake Artists Society. In 1904 he received a commission to provide 75 illustrations for a book 'The English Lakes', published by A. and C. Black, and later illustrated 'The Isle of Wight', 'The Isle of Man'. 'The Norwegian Fjord's, (which was written by him) and numerous other guides to the British Isles. He was the father of William Heaton Cooper.
