Alfred C. Stanley Anderson RA RE (1884-1966) - Original Early 20th Century Etching. Dry point etching, from an edition of 65 proofs, signed in pencil to the lower right just under the image. Titled in pencil and inscribed in pencil to the lower margin, and inscribed indistinctly '(?) in F Prints of the Year 1926'. Exhibited at the Sadley Street Gallery, Wells - an original gallery label affixed to the reverse. Fixed at the top edge to backing card measuring 45 x 32 cm. Signed and inscribed. On wove. Condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and small foxing spots in a areas, mainly to the sky. Plate lines clear and intact.

Anderson was responsible for reviving line engraving as a mode of original graphic expression, when it had become all but obsolete. He learned the process as an apprentice to a heraldic engraver, but initially achieved fame as an etcher and drypointist in the renaissance of British etching during and after World War I. In 1929 he turned his skills to engraving on a copper plate, and he will chiefly be remembered for his engravings of English rural crafts dating from 1932, for which he was made CBE in 1951.
