Alexander Wallace Rimington was a painter and etcher born in London and educated at Clifton, Bristol and in London and Paris. He lived in Weston-Super-Mare at the beginning of his career, moving to London in the 1880’s. He also spent some time at Meran in South Austria, and in Switzerland and Spain. He exhibited oils, watercolours and prints at societies and dealers in London, including the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and the Fine Art Society, which devoted seven solo shows to his work between 1893 and 1912. He was elected an associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers in 1887 and a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1903. He also exhibited at the Paris Salon and was given an Honourable Mention at the Berlin International. Rimington became Professor of Fine Art at Queen’s College, London, and spent much time researching into the relationship between colour and music. He died at Selsey, Gloucestershire and was survived by his wife, the watercolourist and illustrator, Evelyn Jane Whyley.
