Alexander Graham Munro (1903-1885) was a painter, draughtsman and teacher who was born in Mid Calder in West Lothian and educated at George Heriot's School in Edinburgh. He attended the Royal Scottish Academy Schools from where he was awarded a travelling scholarship which took him to Paris where he furthered his studies in the atelier of Andre Lhote. In the 1920's and 1930's, Munro travelled extensively throughout Europe and North Africa, producing a large body of work. In 1930 Munro returned to Edinburgh and worked as an illustrator for Messrs. Thomas Nelson. Munro was elected RSW in 1960 and also exhibited at the RSA and GI. A major posthumous retrospective exhibition was staged at the Portland Gallery in 1989. Munro left a bursary in his name which was to be awarded as an annual travelling scholarship to an artist under thirty who worked largely in a water-based medium.
