The son of marine artist Richmond Markes, Albert Markes first worked as a shop assistant in Newquay, Cornwall. He later moved to London, where he found a ready market for his watercolours of coastal scenes with fishing boats, which he signed 'Albert'. He was sent by dealers to paint on the Essex coast, at Leigh-on-Sea and Southend, and also in Belgium and Holland. He drank a great deal, had only one eye and is believed to have been colour blind.
