A fine copy of Albert Joseph Moore's 1884 composition, 'An Open Book'. The scene depicts a sensuous female figure in a twisted pose, her head resting back on a bent arm with her gaze directed upward. The composition is dominated by warm, saturated fabric: a coral-red bodice with deep folds catches strong directional light, whilst a heavier pink-and-cream brocade skirt pools in thick, sculptural drapes across her lap and legs. Her bare feet emerge at the lower edge, resting against a patterned rug. The work is well presented in a decorative strapwork frame. Unsigned. On canvas laid to panel.
Condition
A light, even patina of age is present across the surface of the artwork. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of previous overpainting to the figure and background. The frame has minor surface wear and small chips at the corners. Overall, the artwork is in very good condition for its age.
