A finely detailed, late Victorian still life in watercolour, showing floral vases, a carved icon tile, fruit and a sprig of old man's beard, all on a brass tray. The painting shows the exactitude and skill of the artist's hand, refined over many years of illuminating and signing books. The artist has signed to the lower left and the painting has been presented in a handsome 19th Century ornate gilt frame with swept rail and corners, boasting foliate and floral strap work and acanthus leaf corners on a hatched ground. Finished with a gold mount. There is a handwritten label at the reverse with the artist's name and address. On wove.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. The frame has some areas of minor loss.

Artist Biography

Albert Henry Warren (1830–1911) was a versatile designer. Proficient as a painter in watercolours and oils, he was also an architectural draughtsman, a chromolithographer, an expert on book-illumination, an art-instructor and a free-lance practitioner whose work included the design and making of picture frames. His most enduring achievements, however, are in the field of book-binding, where he made a significant contribution to the design of cloth casings of the middle of the century.
