A delicate late 19th century watercolour from English artist Albert Ernest Markes (c.1865-1901). Completed in Markes' typical, simplistic style the artist has depicted a large sailing ship moored in low tide. Markes was believed to have been colour blind, possibly explaining the red hues used to complete this watercolour. He was sent by dealers and book publishers to the Essex seaside, Leigh-on-Sea, Southend, and also to Belgium and Holland to capture life on the coast and produce images of ships. Well presented in a washline mount with simple gilt effect frame. Gallery label for 'Beryl Kendall, The English Watercolour Gallery' appears on the reverse detailing the title, artist and medium. Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and areas of foxing. A 1 cm tear is visible to the lower left, which is slightly obscured by the mount. Overall the condition is good.

Artist Biography
Albert Ernest Markes born c.1865, was the son of marine artist Richmond Markes. Albert Markes first worked as a shop assistant in Newquay, Cornwall and later moved to London where he found a ready market for his watercolours of coastal scenes with fishing boats, which he signed 'Albert'. He drank a great deal and had only one eye.
