A charming early 20th Century etching showing the picturesque view of Mermaid Street in Rye. The artist has signed in graphite to the lower right and inscribed the location in plate to the lower left. There is a printer's guild blindstamp at the lower left. On paper.Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration.

Artist Biography
Etcher and watercolourist, born in Durham. Worked initially in the drawing offices of Armstrong Mitchell, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and later as an illustrator for northern papers and periodicals. Travelled extensively around Britain and western Europe. Published etchings of Oxford University colleges1909; of Cambridge colleges in 1910 and of Venice in 1912. Elected Associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, 1910; had a solo exhibition at Dowdeswell & Dowdeswell, 1912. Also exhibited at the Royal Academy, Agnew's, Colnaghi, Fine Art Society, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours. Author of 'The Art of Making Fine Prints', 1901 (reprinted by Nabu Press, 2010). Lived in London, 1905; Essex 1906-20 and in Watford from 1920 until his death in 1936.
