Description
A beautiful and subtly worked nude study in graphite with chalk highlights. The artist has beautifully captured the softness of form in a style that resembles some of Picasso's earlier works, particularly in the face. The artist has signed too the lower left and the drawing has been attractively presented in a simple white frame with a vibrant red mount. There is a framer's label at the reverse with the artist's name inscribed. On pastel paper.Condition

Artist Biography
The artist is the teacher and illustrator Alan Wycliffe Wellings, born in Pattingham, near Wolverhampton – just a few fields away from me – in 1910. By 1926 the was at Wolverhampton School of Art, where at the age of 15 the was among the top eight candidates nationally in the Royal Drawing Society examinations, as reported in this cutting from the Wolverhampton Express & Star. (For another distinguished alumnus of the Wolverhampton School of Art, see the Annesley Tittensor page above.) Wellings went on to the Royal, and then taught at the Eastbrook School for Boys in Dagenham, which enjoyed a progressive arts curriculum at the time. By the late ‘forties the was at South East Essex School of Art. the died in 1985.
