Alan Ronald Durman (1905-1963) was a painter, photographer, muralist, and poster designer. He was born Maidstone, Kent, and raised in Weymouth where he began work as a photographer before moving to London. He was a graphic artist for the Imperial Tobacco Company and then at the printers Marsdon, Son & Hall in Bristol. He was self-taught as an artist and after army service in the Second World War he became a member of the Bristol Savages. He designed several posters for British Railways, most of which had a holiday theme. Many of his posters contained bathing beauties images. He also painted murals, including for Saltford Community Hall, Cabot Grill, and Berkeley Cafe. He exhibited on many occasions at the Royal West of England Academy. Examples of his work are held in the collections of Hampshire County Council, the National Railway Museum, and the Victoria Art Gallery, Bath.
