A charming, chocolate-box study of a rural cottage garden where hens peck at the grass and garden borders bloom with red poppies. The work becomes all the more poignant when one considers that the artist was a prisoner of war during the First World War. The surface features textured and expressive layered paint. Presented in a vintage gilt frame, signed lower right and inscribed to the reverse. On canvas board.

Signs of wear consistent with age. A light, even patina of age is present across the surface of the artwork. The frame has minor surface wear, including small chips and scuffs. The artwork is in very good condition for its age.
