A delightful wood engraving by Agnes Miller Parker (1895-1980). This was one of seventy-three wood engravings created for H.E. Bates’ *Through The Woods: The English Woodland* (1936). Inscribed with the artist's name in graphite to the lower right. Well presented in a wooden frame. On paper.

Condition

The condition is very good. Slight discolouration and foxing to the paper. Minor wear to the frame.

Artist Biography

Agnes Miller Parker (1895-1980) was a Scottish engraver, illustrator and painter. She is best known, however, for her wood engravings, thanks to her collaboration with H.E. Bates which resulted in two illustrated books: Through the Woods (1936) and Down the River (1937). Parker studied at Glasgow School of Art, and also under two wood engravers, Gertrude Hermes and Blair Hughes-Stanton. She later studied with Leon Underwood at his Brook Green School of Art. Most of her work has been for private press books, including Golden Cockerel Press, and is therefore relatively little-known. Amongst her most famous works are the illustrations to the Gregynog Press' 1931 edition of Aesop's Fables. Parker exhibited prints with the English Wood Engraving Society and the Society of Wood Engravers. She was elected an Associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers in 1939. She moved to the Isle of Arran in the early 1960s after the break-up of her marriage, where she remained in a recluse-like existence until her death. Examples of her work are in the collections of the British Museum, Redfern Gallery, Royal Scottish Academy, and the V&A. The centenary of her birth was marked with a retrospective exhibition at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in 1995 with a second show at Cyril Gerber Fine Art, Glasgow, the following year.
