This accomplished work is a study after Willem Drost's celebrated 1647 composition, a painting that for centuries was attributed to the master Rembrandt van Rijn before modern scholarship reattributed it to his talented pupil. The composition depicts a contemplative young boy deeply absorbed in reading at an open window. He is captured in a moment of quiet concentration, the book held before him as natural light illuminates the scene. Beyond the window frame, an urban landscape is just visible. The composition is detailed and full of characteristics synonymous with Dutch Golden Age painting. Presented in silver gilt frame. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.
